The Spineless West
Yesterday Osama threatened to reign hell down on the EU for having the temerity to publish unflattering cartoons of Big Mo. This from a "religion" that condones hacking the heads off of innocents and killing their own sisters for family "honor".
If America had a decent and brave mass-media, every newspaper in the country would have reprinted the cartoons today.
Shall Denmark stand alone? Shame on us.

They cannot be serious
The excellent blog Defence of the Realm covers affairs of the British military, particular procurement, which offends blogger Richard North to the extent that it results in the unnecessary sacrifice of lives. If you're interested in things military - I'd recommend it to you.
And it's from Defence of the Realm that I've nicked this first picture of a new British MoD acquisition that is so bad it is hard to believe it's not a joke.

This is the new Land Rover MWMIK - to be deployed in Afghanistan. It's designed to get people killed.

Here's some key features which didn't make the marketing brochure:
1) ZERO crew protection from gunfire - 360 degree exposure.
2) ZERO mine protection. The crew is sitting over the wheels - absolutely the worst place. The mine goes off when the wheel goes over it - in this case almost assuredly killing the driver and front gunner. The flat bottom hull ensures the blast is directed up against the crew rather than deflected away.
Man that is lame. Reminds one of a Somali "technical". They'd be better off in Chevy Tahoe's with sunroofs.

Public Campaign Financing
From the NY Times:
This is just one of the reasons why it is only fair to have publicly-financed political campaigns. The ex-Governor is very wealthy, and could well afford his own whores, but how is the average schmo running for office going to pay for his?
ALBANY — Federal prosecutors are investigating whether Gov. Eliot Spitzer used campaign funds in connection with his meetings with prostitutes, including payments for hotels or ground transportation, three people with knowledge of the investigation said.
Prosecutors have asked the governor’s lawyers about the travel arrangements for three trips, including his Feb. 13 rendezvous with a prostitute at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington. The United States attorney’s office in Manhattan has also asked about the governor’s use of car services during trips to Washington.
The governor’s lawyers have begun consulting with a campaign finance expert who has long worked for Mr. Spitzer’s political organization to see whether campaign money was spent on the trips, including some as recently as last month, a person briefed on the investigation said.

Disengagement

The graph is from "Israel's War to Halt Palestinian Rocket Attacks" by Dore Gold, also the author of the excellent Tower of Babble regarding his UN experience.
You'll note the effectiveness of unilaterally disengaging.
Wars are won or lost. Quitting in the middle is losing.

Contempt for Law Enforcement
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Police say there is no indication of any link to terrorist activity involving the discovery of the deadly poison ricin that was found in a hotel room near the Las Vegas Strip.
Right. As if you have a clue. Here's a hint for you: bringing vials of one of the worlds most deadly poison to a hotel is a "link to terrorist activity".
It would be so refreshing if there was one honest law enforcement agency that would say "This is a potential WMD, previously used in acts of terrorism. We do not know why it has been manufactured or brought to Las Vegas."
Every law enforcement agency acts as if the only possible danger to Americans is that they will overreact to facts like stupid cattle. The real danger is that the stupid law enforcement agencies will be worrying about the press release when the planes are flying to the buildings. No law enforcement agencies saved anyone on 9/11. The only people who did that were citizens armed with facts and their own courage.
